Money envelopes are an important cultural practice in many marriage celebrations in Eastern cultures, especially in India and China. Giving an envelope with a token amount is considered auspicious. In Hindu marriages, giving individual members of the groom’s family a money envelope is considered a ‘shagun’. These are given out when the groom’s family (Barat) arrives at the bride’s home or marriage venue. The parents or elders of the bride’s family place a red tilak on the forehead of the groom and his family members, present each one of them with a money envelope. The amount will vary according to the bride’s parents but it is no exception to give amount in the thousands. Of particular interest, it is the ending of the amount. Irrespective of whether the money envelope contains a currency of 500 or a 2000 rupee note, there is always a one rupee coin included. This is a highly observed tradition which has an auspicious significance behind it.

At Indian Wedding Card, we are committed to preserving this ancient tradition. Our money envelopes are beautifully designed to suit one of the most important days in your life; your wedding! We can design Money Envelopes to match your wedding suite or create something completely unique and memorable such as envelopes in the shape of leaves or boxes.
